In 2025, the government announced its intention to develop a framework that could grant qualifying investors a direct route toward Argentine citizenship. According to Forbes, while details are still evolving, the initiative has already generated significant international interest and media coverage.
The proposal is particularly noteworthy because it promotes access to a highly ranked passport.
On that basis, if implemented as announced, the program could position Argentina as one of the most competitive citizenship-by-investment destinations in the world.
The United States Factor
Perhaps the most significant development for the Argentine passport has come in recent times from Argentina's relationship with the United States.
In July 2025, Argentina and the United States formally initiated the process for Argentina's potential re-entry into the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP). According to the Argentine Government, if the process is completed successfully, Argentine citizens would be able to travel to the United States for tourism and business purposes without obtaining a traditional visa, using an ESTA authorization instead.
This is not an immediate change. The process requires Argentina to satisfy a series of strict security, immigration, and reciprocity standards, and could take considerable time to complete.
However, for the Department of Homeland Security, the fact that the process has officially begun is significant in itself. Only a small number of countries worldwide participate in the Visa Waiver Program, and Argentina was previously part of it between 1996 and 2002.
If Argentina were to rejoin the programme, the value and benefits associated with the Argentine passport would likely increase even further.
More Than a Passport
For many people considering relocation, investment, or a second citizenship strategy, the Argentine passport is not simply a travel document.
It represents access to one of Latin America's largest economies, membership in Mercosur, strong global mobility, compatibility with multiple citizenships, and, potentially, an even stronger international position in the years ahead.
