Argentina has earned a place on Forbes’ 2026 list of The Best Places to Retire Abroad, joining a select group of 24 countries across five continents that the publication considers attractive destinations for Americans looking to spend their retirement years overseas. And the regional context makes Argentina’s inclusion particularly noteworthy.

We work with a lot of people who do not need a visa to enter Argentina as tourists. For them, the standard path to residency is straightforward on paper: enter the country, apply for residency from within, receive a precaria permit, and wait. But that process requires staying in Argentina for the duration. And that is where things get complicated.

Decree 366/2025, the Immigration Reform of May 29, 2025, introduced some stricter language around the precaria and left it to the discretion of the Immigration Department whether to grant it at all. In practice, however, it is always issued. Without it, the applicant would simply be undocumented while waiting, which serves nobody.
